THE DISCOVERY OF ICELAND —o— CELAND is an island situated on the North Atlantic, and is found between the parallels 63 deg. 24 min. and 66 deg. 33 min. North Latitude and the Meridians 15 deg. 45 min. and 26 deg. 50 min. West Longitude. The nearest countries are, Norway to the East and Ireland and some of the Northern Isles of Scotland to the South. The Vikings of Norway, those adventurous mariners of olden times, the greatest sailors of that period, were the first to discover Iceland. One of these named Naddodd was the first to set foot in our country, this was in the year 861, A.D. As soon as winter came on, he prepared to return to his native land. He noticed the mountain peaks were covered with snow and the climate was exceed- ingly cold and he appropriately called this newly discovered country Snowland. In the year 865, A.D., another of the Vikings, by the name of Gardar, visited the Island and after having navigated his ship around the Island, called it after himself, Gardar’s Island. In the year 867, A.D., a third adventurer, by the name of Floki, on arriving, disembarked his men and concluded to settle on the Is- land, taking ashore what live stock they had with them. The land- ing was made in the broad bay, on the west side of the Island. However, as fishing was extremely good, they neglected to make any provision for winter provender for their live stock, so that, in consequence of their not cutting any hay during the summer, all of their live stock died that winter.
