This so affected the heathen leaders that they declared that they would have no more to do with the Christian element, but would have a pronouncing lawyer of their own and accordingly appointed a man by the name of Thorgeir. He had been a leader before and although a heathen, was a just, upright, honest and highly intelli- gent man of good morals and was always listened to with great re- spect by the people when he addressed them. He however co- operated with Hall, who was the Christian leader, and finally Thor- geir was accepted as president for both parties. For 24 hours be- fore addressing the Althing, he absented himself and shut himself up in his tent covered with ropes and fasted and refused to speak to any one. At the end of this time he rose and walked to Logberg and having taken his accustomed place, he sent out word to the peo- ple and the result was the greatest convention ever held in Ice- land. He then delivered the speech, which has made him famous, commencing by saying that, ‘If the law is divided then peace will be no more.’ He impressed upon the people the terrible state the country would be in if the legislative body W'ere divided and there was no oneness in religion and said we must have one statute and one religion. This speech so wrought the people up that they till sided with him and the whole national party promised to accept and obey the proposed statute, one passage of which read as fol- lows: ‘Every man, woman and child, throughout the length and breadth of the land, who has not already been, shall be baptized and become Christians,’ he disregarded some of their heathen pro- pensities, as these disappeared without trouble in the year 1000.
