32 there was considerable dissension between them and the bishop, and it took a long time and hard work on the part of the archbishop to become a mediator between them. But after a time some of the leaders were induced to refer to him for judgment and, it was by this means that the archbishop obtained a greater hold in the island and consequently more power. In the years 1217-19, a man who resided at Odda, whose name was Jonscn, had a disagreement with some Norwegian merchants and Earl Skule, who was a ruler of Norway, at that time, knowing for a fact that the merchants had been honestly dealt with and unreasonably treated by the Ice- landers, decided to send an army to Iceland to obtain retribution. At this time Snorri Sturluson, an Icelander, was in Norway, and hearing of the Earl’s intention, went to him and discussed the matter with him and promised the Earl that he would make ar- rangements with his countrymen to treat the Norwegian merchants honestly. It is thought that Snorri made a secret covenant with the Earl to have Iceland annexed to Norway in order to save the Icelanders from destruction, but as the merchants were all well treated and honestly dealt with, Snorri on his arrivel in Iceland gave up the idea of annexation, but the king of Norway was working for the annexation and began by interfering with certain matters that had happened. The archbishop and the king were both trying to obtain the same object and at this time the leader of Althing and Bishop Gud- mundson were at loggerheads. Finally the king of Norway sent a summons commanding some of the leaders to appear before him in Norway, so that he could set- tle matters they could not agree upon among themselves. This they at that time refused to do, but when the feuds had caused such intense hatred between them that there seemed no possibility of a settlement of their disputes, they appealed to him for his judgment, getting him to act as mediator. In this way foreign leaders interfered with the government of Iceland and by purchasing control of some of the leaders, were able
