3i to rule the land and not only run the government, but obtain im- mense profits for themselves. Sturla Sighvatson Tries to Conquer Iceland for the King of Norway. This man went to Rome to receive remission of his sins from the Pope, for the injustice he and his father had done to Bishop Gud- mund, which having received, he on his return stayed in Norway during that winter. King Hakon Hakonson called Sturla to him and commanded him to conquer Iceland and annex it to Norway, promising to pay him well for his trouble. He also instructed him to induce the leaders to come to Norway and while they were absent he was to conquer their constituencies. Sturla started for home in the year 1235. In the following year he got his men prepared for war and at- tacked his uncle Sncrra Sturlson and his son Urokja who had been the cause of turning many of his constituents against him during his absence. He fought with Snorra, and caused Urokja to leave Iceland and go to Norway. In the year 1237 Sturla fought another battle with Thorleif Thordarson who was in command of a nearby constituency and was victorious. Snorra and several other leaders had to leave the country for Norway. Thus Sturla conquered the whole of the west quarter of the land and next turned his attention to subduing Gissur Thorvaldson, who was the wealthiest leader of the south quarter, but by co-operation with Kolbein Arnorson, the leader of the north quarter, they suc- ceeded in vanquishing him, killing not only himself, but also his father and his brothers who were taking his part in the feud.
