33 would disobey the king’s command, as he knew that the king was the instigator and cause of the death of Sturla and Sighvat. This action of his so incensed the king that he wrote and sent a letter to Gissur Ihorvaldson, telling him to see that Snorri was sent back to Norway or failing that to have him killed. Gissur kept this letter secret and informed no one of his inten- tions, but one night he left his home with 70 men and proceeded cau- tiously to Reykholt, the residence of Snorri, and surprised Snorri, who was totally unprepared for defence in his bedroom and mur- dered him. Snorri was 63 years old when he was assassinated. The Leaders and the King’s Intervention. Some time after the events just related, a great feud sprang up between Thordar Sighvatson and Kolbeins the younger, and after the decease of Kolbeins, he fought a great battle with Brand (a relative of Kolbeins) and became the leader after he had killed Brand. By this time Thordur and Gissur had become the most influ- ential and wealthy leaders in Iceland and they commanded the whole of the Republic. But they could not agree on several matters and so they concluded to appeal to the King of Norway to act as media- tor and left Iceland to visit the king. But as the king desired to annex Iceland to Norway he gave them very little satisfaction, and so he ordered Thordur to take the reins of government in hand and endeavor to induce the country to become subservient to the throne of Norway and pay taxes to the king. Accordingly Thor- dur returned to Iceland and stayed there three years, purchasing during that time the chief portion of the land, giving him the ruling power, not so much for the king as for his own aggrandizement. So the king ordered him to return to Norway. All this time the king had caused Gissur to remain in Norway and on Thordur’s return, he ordered Gissur to go to Iceland for the same object as Thordur had been there before. He therefore returned home and he also governed the country more for himself than for the
