39 desired, but the power of the church over state increased consider- ably. He advocated and brought before Althing a new cede, called ‘Christians’ Rights Code’ and the greater part was accepted by Al- thing in the year 1275. Bishop Arni was therefore the founder and instigator of the immense power and wealth the church eventually gained and held till the 16th century, at which time owing to outside causes the reli- gion of the country was changed. The King Makes Additional Claims. In Ihe year 1286 King Eirik sent one of the priests to summon 40 men from each of the four quarters, to act as soldiers and fight for him against Sweeden. But a man named Rafn Oddson, the head lawyer at that time, called his friends together and in spite of all the bishop could do (and although a few were willing to obey the summons) they suc- ceeded in preventing the consummation of the king’s order, which would have taken 160 of the best men of the island to other coun- tries for military purposes. When Hakon Magnuson became king of Norway he sent c\cr a man, by the name of Alfur, with two commissioners, who were lawyers, but the people refused to recognize the king, so the lawyers returned empty handed at that time, but in a year later, on condition that the king agreed not to deprive them of their right according to Ancient Statutes, agreements, and also the Book ot Laws which were authorized in 1302, so that (with the exception of a few Danish lawyers in the 18th century) all lawyers in Iceland were natives of the island. A few years later the king again sent Alfur, demanding ac- knowledgement, and he narrowly escaped death, had not one of the leaders saved him. This happened in the year 1306. Althing refused to accept the king’s demands, and the people assembled in the south quarter to defend their country, in defence of their rights and beyond a doubt the other quarters would have co-
