But in the year 1434, a pitched battle was fought and the Icelanders were vic- torious. The king of Norway and the Bergen merchants finding that commercial relations between them and the Icelanders was suffering by the inroads of the English traders, prohibited the English from trading with Iceland, issuing orders to that effect to the governor and commanded him to see that his orders were obeyed by both Icelanders and English. On one occasion an Icelandic governor was captured by the English and taken to England. Finally the king of Denmark made an arrangement by which they were allowed to trade with Iceland, by paying a certain amount of taxes. But owing to the evasion of the Engilsh of paying the import duty, the hostilities continued. The governor, who was mentioned above as having been cap- tured by the English, was named Bjorn the wealthy, and he had such bitter feelings towards the English, that he by the king’s or- ders forced them to pay customs duty, which so incensed the Eng- lish that they murdered him. His wife, who was a woman of determined mind, ordered her men and obtained the help of her friends and raised a force which contended with the English and killed nearly all of them. During the 16th century the Germans began to trade with Ice- land, which caused a great animosity between them and the English, as their goods could be bought by the Icelanders for less than the English could supply them for. Consequently during the early part of the 16th century, the feud caused them to open hostilities and resulted in victory for the Germans and they forced the English to leave the port. The Overbearing Conduct of the Bishops. During the nth and 12th centuries the bishops endeavored to increase the desire for tetter knowledge and a more amicable feeling
