49 commanded him to protect Roman Catholicism at all costs, even to fighting for it if necessary. The bishop was exceedingly pleased when he received these instructions and determined to fight for the church and its right. The first idea was protection of what he had, so he erected a line of forts around the bishopric of Holum. lie next sent his sons to arrest Bishop Martin, of Skalholt, whom he put in prison at Hol- um. In the summer of 1550 he marched with a large army to Al- thing, and Althing had to submit to any rules or laws he made. He then marched to Skalholt and took it into his possession. After this he went to Videy, at which place he drove out all the Danes who were in the monastery and restored order there according’ to the old regime. On the way he did the same thing at Helgalfell. The following autumn he went to Saudafell, with the intention of capturing a farmer named Dada Gudmundson, of Snoskdal, an active adherent of the king’s. But Dada having got together a body of picked men, surprised the bishop and his sons and made them prisoners. Dada took them to Skalholt with the intention of keeping them there until the next Althing met, but the governor being afraid that they might either escape or be rescued desired to have them executed at once. Consequently Bishop Jon and his sons were beheaded on the 7th of November, 1550. During the winter following the bishop’s adherents killed the governor and many Danes also. The 3rd Period, From 1550—1683. Kingly Power and Monopoly. After the death of the bishop resistance to the introduction of Lutheranism ceased, and the following summer the king sent over three war vessels and by this means caused the ordinances of re- formation to be accepted by the whole population and Bishop Jon and his sons were pronounced traitors, and no one had the energy or power to defend this accusation.
