with arms and ammunition and manned by a crew of malevolent, desperate, blood-thirsty, merciless men, who being Moslems hated Christians, arrived at Grindavik on the south part of the island and robbed the place. From there they went to Bersastada, intending to capture two merchant vessels which were anchored in a narrow harbor, but ran ashore and were there for two days, working hard to get their ships afloat again. Bersastadur was the governor’s seat at that time and they had some obsolete cannon or large guns of some kind, but it is presumed on account of their antiquity the governor was afraid to fire them, so the pirates sailed away unhurt. The part of the country that suffered most from their depredations and rapine, was in the West- man Islands, and the eastern coast. In the Westman islands they captured 240 of the inhabitants, whom they took away and sold as slaves. Ten years later the king of Den- mark paid a ransom for twenty of them. They also killed some of the people and pillaged their towns, in fact took everything of value they could. The people that were sick or wounded they put into the merchant buildings and set fire to them and burned every one in them. On the east coast they captured no, who they also took with them. One of the darkest pages in our history was the fanatical su- perstition and belief in witchcraft, abounding all over the country, which became almost an epidemic during the 17th century. The belief in the rites and orgies was introduced from foreign countries and the people were perfect fanatics in religious matters, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries, when it amounted to an almost inordinate savagery; consequently the good seed sown by the introduction of Lutheranism was checked and became stagnant. The popular belief in devils increased to such an extent, that the people really believed they could see imps and devils all around them.
