65 ignorant and in poor circumstances. They did not have the neces- sary school books. The condition of the schools was bad, being in poor situations, mere especially at Holum, where Sigurdur Vigfuson, who was called the Icelandic giant, was schoolmaster. Revd. Harboe in the year 1743, made a new ordinance for con- ducting and managing the school's. There is no doubt that had the bishops done their duty by supplying the necessary funds to furnish good teachers and school books and other arti- cles needed for the use of the scholars and teachers, much good would have been done. He also introduced the rite of confirmation of the young boys and girls, when they had learned their catechism. This had already been introduced into the church in Denmark. In the same year 1744, he also caused to be translated into Icelandic, a Christian school book, which is called ‘Pontoppid- ans’ and ordered the clergy to see that the children were instructed in it. The pastors were also ordered to visit all the homes and ex- amine the children to find out what progress they had made in their education and study of the Christian beliefs. But when a generation is brought up in ignorance, hardship and in a barbarous manner, and intellectual thought and self-will almost: unheard of, improvement comes but by slow degrees. The king being of a religious turn of mind and desirous of bet- tering his people, thought it possible, by issuing a penal statute regarding education and Christian teaching it might be of benefit, but although some of it was of much use and no doubt necessary, other portions and rules were not. For instance, he forbade that chil- dren should be allowed to read the history of their own country and he had inserted many other rules that were not of much account. The Fifth Period, 1750 to 1830. Fight Against Monopoly and Ignor- ance. Skuli Magnuson. Commerce and Factories. In the year 1749 Skuli Magnuson was the governor of Iceland. He was in the prime of his life and well known for his energy and ability and was a hard man to deal with if he met with resistance to his will.
