7o Magnus Stephenson and the Educational Association. Magnus Stephenson, the chief justice of Iceland, established in 1794 an educational association for the purpose of increasing learn- ing and knowledge amongst the people. He was the mainstay and life of the institution. He purchased the printing press and materials from Hrappey and also that at Holum ; these he removed to Leirar- garda. He wished to improve literature, as he considered the edu- cation of the people was much behind the times and needed refor- mation, to bring it up to the manner or fashion in which it was used in other countries, in other words he wanted everything to be up to date. He printed pamphlets or small books which he called by the name cf ‘Remarkable News’ and many good books. One remarkable specimen was the history of the 18th century which is considered the best in that class of history in Iceland. During the war between Denmark and England, he was unable to obtain any paper, so he had to give up printing until the war was over. As soon as he could, he again commenced and printed a monthly pamphlet which he called ‘Cloister Posten. These he continued to publish for nine years, 1818—1825 and 1827. Magnus was notable for his great energy and learning. He repeatedly printed books, one fol- lowing the other in quick succession, but he found that the people were too conservative and so education did not advance as rapidly as it might. The people as a rule did not seem to care for new books. Many of them understood his purpose, others were envious of his energy, others over his circumstances, some thought him dom- ineering, thus showing their ingratitude. For them he sacrificed his own benefit by publishing the very best books he could procure. He got into the habit of writing discussions and created a great deal of dissatisfaction amongst cer- tain classes. He unfcrtunately was not well acquainted with Ice- landic literature as he should have been and consequently was unable to publish anything suitable for the lower classes. He died in the year 1833 and the educational association ceased to exist.
