84 which he fought with energy, determination and patience to the last. In the year 1848 liberalism was being fought for in the northern part of Europe with greater fervor and this naturally affected Ice- land more or less. In that year good King Christian died and Frederick 7th became king of Denmark. He however soon after turned over the reins of government into the people’s hands and the kingdom became a limited monarchy and many great changes were made in governmental affairs in Denmark and a special department formed for the government of Iceland and the prime minister was Brynjolfur Peterson, but to the regret of the Icelandic people, he did not live long after his appointment. The following year a new constitution was established in Den- mark and in Iceland the people also looked for a new constitution, and there was one to be sent, before it should become law, so that the Icelanders should have a voice in the matter and discuss it over amongst themselves. The Icelanders wished to have a government of their own which would meet in the island and have Althing legislative power. In the year 1851 a mass meeting was called at Reykjavik to discuss the constitution for Iceland. But the conservatives were in power at the time in Denmark and they sent an army corps to Reykjavik to keep the peace. The inhabitants were surprised be- cause no one had any thought of rebellion. The Danish government ordered Trampe, the governor, to put before the meeting a statement about the position of the island in the kingdom. In Copenhagen the Danish government wished to have the same constitution in Iceland as was approved for Denmark, just as it was and without any comparison of the difference between the two countries in their wants and circumstances. This occurred on June 8th, 1849. The constitution they wished passed read as follows. For the government of Iceland the legislative power should be in the hand of the king and that Althing only have power to act on smaller cases and all of the special ones should be called Danish cases.
