The Latin original consists of 61 distichs (1221ines) which are printed scparately in Italics, each followed by a rhymed Icelandic version in Gothic type, usually filling three lines. It is, of course, possible that the book, even when perfect, contained no proper imprint. Bishop Guöbrandur in 1G22 was already eighty years of age, and although Arngrímur Jónsson was still in the priine of life at fifty-four, he was already, doubtlesss much oc- cupied with the affairs of the see, the duties of which he wholly took upon himself two years later, owing to the senile inactivity of the bishop. The books issued at Hól- ar, during these years all show a want of care and lack of proper material (paper etc.) in the printing - office. The volume of which we are treating is by no means free from misprints. THE THREE TRACTATES. 1. Catonis disticha. — This collection of moral sayings has enjoyed great popularity, particularly in the schools of Europe, during the last four centuries. After the invention of printing editions of it in the origi- nal Latin became very frequent, and it was translated into many tongues, facts to which the gencral bibliographies (such as Grásse and Brunet), incompletc as their lists are, bcar abundant testimony. It has not been possible to find, either in Latin or in any modern tongue, a publica- tion comprising the three works which are here combined in a single volume. There are many editions of the “Distichs” of Cato containing also the “Dicta Septem Sapientum Greciæ”, but the accessible biblographies cite none which also contains the “De Civiltate Morum” of Johannes Sulpicius (which, in other forms has been often enough printed).
