IN ICELAND 25 mattugur Gud þijn giæte) addressed to Sigurður Jónsson, the lawman, by síra Hallgrímur(pp. 217-218); a funeral poem to the poet’s daughter, Steinunn, (pp. 218- 221) ; a Burtfarar Mining Árna Oddssonar lögmans, (pp. 221-227); another funeral poem to Björn Gíslason ; two other pieces in honor of the same person ; a hymn I Sams&ti kved- id, two songs, (fil-Erindi ad Skilnadi kvedin and Leir- kolls vijsur% and a Paraþhrasis metrica of the latter in Latin by Bishop Jón Vidalín. — This is the third edition of the Hallgrímskver, a collection of scattered hymns and other verse of the great hymnologist gathered together by the learned Hálfdan Einarsson, who edited the first five editions. In this third edition the poem by Hallgrímur Eldjárnsson was printed for the first time. There have been fourteen issues of this work since the first was published nearly a century and a half ago, all but two of which (Viðey 1828 and Reykjavík 1857) the W. F. collect- ion possesses. An account of them is given by Dr. Grímur Thomsen in the preface to the second volume of his edi- tion of the poet’s Sálmar ogKvafti (pp. IV-VII). The series of editions is as follows : 1. Of the rarity of the original edition in Iceland Dr. Thomsen writes : “Þessi útgáfa er mjögfá- gæt, og ekki er hún til á söfnum hér á landi, en Vald. Ásmundarson á eintak af henni”. This is the fourth edition of the “Hallgrímskver” ; it was popularly styled “tólffiskakver- iö,” because it was sold for 12 “fiskar”, the price given on the t. - p.
