Torlákur Guhbrandsson wrote the first eight cantos and 82 verses of the ninth canto, the rest is composed by Árni Böðvarsson. — Toriákur Guðbrandsson was a grandson of Amgrímur Jónsson the I.earned ; he died 1707. He was considered one of the best poets of his age, and has even been called Iceland’s Ovid (Giessing, Jubel - Lcerere II. 2., p. 50). Besides many other poems he wrote a “Háttalykill” (29 verses), “Rímur af Flores og Blanceflúr” and “Kímur af Gísla Súrssyni.” A portion of the first canto of the tílfars rlmur (v. 44-80) isprinted in Rask’s Sýnishorn (Stockholm 1819).—A second edition was published at Vidcy 1834 (Brit. The volume ends at the bottom of p. 195 with one of those singular references to errors of the press, such as are not uncommon in old Icelandic books: N.B. Hvad misprentast hefur so, Yfirsioon finist i\)essu Kveri, þarf m ad leidriettast eftir Kierrleikans Bodordi og rietum [sic] Skilningi. ai \>eim sana Chi'istindoomi.— This is a translation of the com- ment on Luther’s lesser catechism, written in Danish by Erik [Ludvigsen] Pontoppidan (1698-1764), bishop of Throndhjem—which was first published in 1737, and be- came the standard smaller catechism for Denmark and Norway. This was at once rendered into Icelandic by Bishop Halldór Brynjólfsson of Hólar, and printed at Copenhagen 1741 (Brit. Mus. Cat., col 12). This was— perhaps in part owing to inadequate proof-reading—so full of errors that it was laughed at in Iceland and nick- named “Rangi Ponti” (in a sort of assonant phrase), or “Bungling Ponti”. So it was necessary to make a ncw version, which was executed by a man of much worth, thc Rev. Högni Sigurösson (b. Nov. 8, 1693, d July 7, 1770)t priest of Breiöabólstaöur (where he ended his days) in Southern Iceland. Fifty of his 78 years—up to his resig- nation in 1764— he performed continuously the functions of his priestly office. In fact, he was so devoted a mcm- ber of his profession that he brought up his seven sons as preachers of thegospel, oneof them succeeding him in his own parish. They all took orders and it is said that on one Sunday they assembled together — father and sons— for service in the same church and at the same altar — each clad in his sacerdotal vestments.— The rendcring of Pontoppidan’s catechisra appeared first at Copenhagcn, and the following list of editions is more complete than that given in the Bibl. Not. IV. no. 66; J. Kaupmanna- höfn 1746 (Brit. Mus. Cat. col. 12) ; 2. Hólar 1759; 3. Hólar 1764 ; 4. Hólar 1769 ; 5. Hólar 1773; 6. Hólar 1775; 7. Hólar 1781 ; 8. Hólar 1791. The collection possesses five (1746, 1769, 1773, 1775, 1781) of these eight editions. It has also a compendium of Pontoppidan’s book printed at Copenhagen in 1770, made by the Rcv. Vigfús Jónsson (1736 -1786), priest of Miklaholt. It was dedicated to the learned Finnur Jónsson, bishop of Skál- holt. The compiler says in his preface that he was inci- ted to write the compend by two siinilar ones which he found greatly used in Denmark the one by the Rev. Pc- der Grove Beyer (1707-90) entitled — Sp(f>rgsmaal og Forklaring over Catechismus (Sor0 1767), and the othcr by the Rev. Peder Vinding—Vejvisning til de saliggjom rende Sandhedcr (Ki0benhavn 1765). The collection’s copy of the rare little Compendium of Pontoppidan by Vigfús Jónsson unfortunately lacks the title-folio, but is otherwise complete (ff.
