Martinus Mirus”, etc. What was the title of the German original of this work we have not been able to find, nor where and when it was published. For Mathesius see Bibl. Not. IV. 9. Martinus Mirus (1532-1593) chaplain at the court of Dresden, is specially known for the seven sermons against the Papacy which he delivered at the Reichstag in Regensburg 1575 besides being author of a considerable number of other religious writings. Johannes Gigas (1514-1581), humanistand theologian, had areputa- tion as Latin poet, and his “Katechismuspredigten” (Ca- techismus Gigantis), which he publishcd in 1577 was a well-known work and much used for long time. Marcus Marullus of Spalato is conspicuous in the literary history of Hungary as a Christian moralist and theological writer (“Evangelistarius” and other works), as translator (1510) of the history of Dalmatia and Croatia, written in the 12th century by an unknown ecclesiastic of Dioclea,, and as the first collector of the ancient Dalmatian inscrip- tions * 5. The title-folio is lacking but has been supplied by a neat and exact facsimile. Other- wise the volume is perfect. It consists partly of a trans- lation, not alone of the 53d chapter of Esaias but of the final (13th, 14th and 15th) verses of chapter 52 as well, and partly of a comment on this portion of Scripture. The whole passage is first given, and afterwards the sepa- rate verses, or sentences, are cited, each of these quota- tions, or texts, being followed bya comment—sometimes a brief paragraph, sometimes several pages in length. The translation was made by the untiring Bp. Guöbrand- ur Þorláksson. Hewas perhaps more noted as a hymnologist than as an exegetical writer, publishing several collections of hymns in Latin and Ger- man. He likewise wrote a Latin piece entitled : “Theo- phania comœdia nova de primorum parentum conditione” (Wittemberg 1560), showing himself a worker in other poetic ficlds than that of psalmody. * 6. This is the first edit- ion ; the date of the second, as given in Bp. Harboe’s list of Icelandic theological works in use at this time (Ð'áni- sche BibliotheCy I-IX, Copenhagen 1738-49, vii., G47-66G— see p. 654) is 1618, but according to Finnur Jdnsson (iii., 380) and Hálfdan Einarsson (217) 1619; though the exis- tence of such an edition is rendered doubtful by the fact that the editions of 1GG9 and 1691 are respectively styled on their title-pages the second and third. The bibliogra- phies give scant information regarding the author of the Danish version, which appeared in 1615 (Bruun, i., 258). From its title it appears that it was “vdi Sp0rsmaal forfat- ted ved Jo. Spangenbergium” and “vdsat paa Danskc aff Jens Nielss0n Clostergaard”. Worm (i., 225) cites thc
