But if all accounts be true, they use a decidedly wide selection of herbs for such a purpose. It is easy to ■understand their choice of the fragrant thyme, which everywhere abounds, and invites infusion by its appetising odour. Nothing strikes the visitor much more than the comparative absence of the real beverage. Nine times out of ten the cup that a maiden brings to awaken the sleepy guest, that follows the breakfast, that bids God-speed to the wayfarer, that consoles him while waiting for supper, and ends the day’s provision, will be the universal cafd. The hills on the left are lonely, so far as mankind is concerned, but foxes are prowling around, and their skins are brought down to the stores. We had several live specimens on board for the gardens at Copenhagen, and a snarling, yelping crew they were, playing or quarrelling the whole of the livelong day. The Grettis Saga, that weird fantastic story of his life, has been translated ; and such an •episode as his struggle with the vampire Glamr is worthy of a lonely country house on a stormy Christmas Eve. At Borg the ruins of the refuge reared by Finnbogi and his band may yet be seen. Flanked by a lake on either side, with its front defended by a rushing stream, the position must have been a strong one. Within such boundaries lay the Borgarvirki, the actual stronghold, simply an ancient crater, like the Eldborg on the western coast. Mr. Metcalfe pictures it as a circular rock, perpendicular •externally, except on one side, where you scramble up a steep slope, barred at its summit by a wall of loose basaltic slabs, on either side of which the natural portals tower another fifty feet. The interior of the crater forms a courtyard-like enclosure a hundred and thirty feet across, wherein remain the lines of stones which mark the inner shelters and defences. A few miles further on the path enters the wild but fertile Vatnsdal. At our feet are the countless cones which occupy a square mile of fire- riddled, blistered earth. Some are merely sand-heaps, others have an outer coating of slags and plates, or are simply gaping lava mouths, but most have settled into harmless-looking hillocks, over a few of which the mantle of a velvet turf begins to spread. Beyond lies a line of prosperous farms, on either side the river. Perhaps oftentimes the charm of ownership may
