32 ICELANDIC PICTURES. for hunting, birds for the shooting, except the eider duck, fish for the catching, except in a few of the many salmon streams, flowers for the gathering, all await us ; and when the day’s work ends, a hearty welcome at the first farmhouse, whatever the traveller’s plight, whatever the hour. How can we reach this wizard land ? Two companies provide com- munication : The Leith and Iceland Steamship Company, by the Magnetic, from Leith, or sometimes Newcastle; and the United Steamship Company of Copenhagen, by the Laura and the Thyra from Copenhagen, calling at Granton. The Magnetic makes about half-a-dozen trips, during the summer, mainly to bring back cargoes of sheep and horses, and so her return dates are not always to be depended on. The Laura and the Thyra are the Danish royal mail boats, and keep up regular communication with Reykjavik throughout the year, while one of them, the Thyra, as a rule, goes round the north coast, to and fro, three or four times during the summer, beginning in April or May, when the Greenland ice has disappeared from the northern fjords. There is not much difference in the size of the boats, and the saloon fare is the same in each. The Danish boats carry also second-class passengers, they call at the Faroe Islands, and as Icelanders and Danes travel by them, he who wants to gather all he can of knowledge and of interest will do so too. Should time permit the voyage of sixteen days or so round the north, a treat will be secured that no hurried run to Reykjavik can ever give. The Thyra’s cosy two berth cabins, her genial English-speaking officers, and few but friendly passengers, the towering hills and twisted rocks that give an ever-changing panorama, as the steamer glides from fjord to fjord, the constant stops at trading stations, the interchange of goods, the habits of the coastmen, the glimpses here and there of true Icelandic life, combine to form a perfect picture and leave the happiest memory. Between the eastern coast of Iceland and Granton lie some seven hundred miles of sea, and the voyage takes from four to five days. To Reykjavik is nearly half as far again, and six or seven must be reckoned for the thousand miles. In either case, a day is spent among the Faroe Islands, a most convenient half-way house. Twenty-four hours after leaving port the Orkneys will most probably appear to larboard, usually North Ronaldsha, the northernmost, and Dennis Head, its northern point. Off to the right is Fair Isle, midway between the Orkneys and the Shetlands, where, in Armada days, the Duke of Medina Sidonia lost his ship. Another two-and-twenty hours and we shall see the Faroes. One after another they loom out before us, like great grey clouds, that change, as we approach, to pyramids of mountain blue, and then to fortresses of frowning rock, with pedestals of deepest green. Emerald isles are these, wherever grass can keep a hold, for, like the banks of Newfoundland, those of Faroe are often clothed in fog. A great submarine bank stretches south-westward;
