The policy of the Women's Alliance for the parliamentary elections 1987. The aim of the Women's Alliance is to make women's perspectives, experience and culture a no less important policy-making force in our society than that of men. The Women's Alliance wants to nurture and develop that which is positive in women's outlook on the world and harness it forthe betterment of society as a whole. The Women's Al- liance wishes to change society and put respect for life and shared responsibility as it's first priority. Women are used to thinking of other people's needs. For untold generations they have carried the responsibility for homes, children, the old and the sick. Thanks to these traditional tasks, and women's upbringing their experience is different from that of men. The consequ- ence of women's experience is a different set of values from that which predomi- nates in a man's world. Women's knowledge and points of view have, however, lit- tle say in the decision making process, to the untold detriment of society. The goals of the Women's Alliance will never be achieved unless women's cir- cumstances and conditions are improved and their influence on the administra- tion of our society is increased. Women still hold the low-waged positions on the job market and have fewer opportunities than men. Women are still responsible for unpaid work in the home, housework and childcare — and their leisure time is negligible. Anything we can do to ameliorate women's situation will serve to make a better and more just society. Running for parliament is one of the ways we believe women's influence can be increased and their situation improved. This way we can ensure that feminism has a voice in parliament. The salary-cuts and the housing policy of the past years have pulled the rug from under many families in this country and have resulted in dissolution and un- happiness. They have hit hardest those whose position is the weakest and whose power is the least, and women form a majority of this group. If the floodgates of free market economics are allowed to open, what little mutual support there is will be in jeopardy. This network of support was built up through the unceasing struggle of former generations, and is founded on the ideal of levelling out in- equalities in people's conditions and circumstances. It follows that the Women's Alliance in parliament must protect these achieve- ments and will put its hands to the task of extending them even further. 1
