Salaries Women completely or substantially fill the ranks of a considerable number of professions. These are predominantly jobs related to caring for people, child raising, education and working in fish factories. Women used to do much of this work inside the home, but now it has been exter- nalized and integrated into the economy where it is grossly underrated. Women have made their way into all areas of the economy, but they have had little say in its shaping — after all, they are never asked. The disrespect for women's jobs is made appa- rent by the wage discrimination which is practised on the job market. For years, women have fought for decent salaries. They have re- sorted to many methods. They have educated themselves, worked long hours, to- lerated an incentive wage system, resorted to mass resignations and strikes and so forth, but without success. They are always on the bottom of the scale. The law on sexual equality passed in 1976 has in no way changed the salary discrimination practised on women. In recent years the salary gap has increased and in 1985 men had a 59% higher annual income than women. Women going into traditional male professions is no solution in itself — instead women's jobs, in all their forms, must be given more value and prestige. Many people, especially women, have to face living on salaries which are of- ficially recognised as being below a subsistence level. Even in homes where both parents work, ordinary working people find it hard to make ends meet. Large families and single parent families are the worst hit by the prevailing wages pol- icy. People's salaries, women's as well as men's, should be decided by their work contribution as individuals, not their marital status. The evaluation of work con- tribution must change if women’s salaries are to equal men's. The underestima- tion of women's work leads to women not receiving due recognition for their work — work which is both difficult and full of responsibility. Up to now it has been men who have evaluated women's jobs and negotiated for pittances on their behalf in labour disputes. Women's only option is to take mat- ters into their own hands. 4
