THREE VISITS TO ICELAND. 87 Thingvellir. Arni had found for his assistant a schoolfellow called Halldor Hermannsson. He is a tall strong youth, very quiet and civil, but not so bright as Arni—slower and less polished in manner, though most inoffensive, poor lad! Our journey was by the same road as last year, and the places seem so familiar; but we had a far better day, and one or two incidents that did not happen last year. One was that the baggage-pony, driven loose, which was rather given to straying, went into a small river for a little variety in its journey, and so deep that it looked perilous for our “little all” of luggage. Arni and Halldor went after it, but the silly thing went tramping on, with its two pack boxes and the “ hold-all,” till it got to a deep place, and at last down went its hind-quarters in the most alarming way. It really looked as if the poor thing would be crushed, but with the utmost coolness and deliberation it gradually righted itself, and turned back to where poor Arni, wading knee-deep, could catch it, and pull the packs, which had slipped round, straighter, and got it out. One box’s con- tents were slightly wet, but mercifully only clothes which could easily dry again, and books, paints, and food escaped unhurt, thanks to Arni’s promptness. The strength, cool- ness, and activity of the beasts is certainly marvellous. Any other horse would have come out with strained hocks at the very least, but this wiry little fellow trotted on as if nothing had happened, and is perfectly right to-day. A very pleasant feature of this country is the quiet gentle way in which the ponies are handled. I never have seen the whip used but for actual driving, and that sparingly, never for punishment or spite; and when I fear many of our own country folk, certainly in England, would jag their mouths and knock them about for straying or going wrong, these good people seem to take it as a matter of course, and you never hear even a scolding word. As a natural conse- quence the ponies show no fear even when in difficulties,
