First we got our letters—those written to meet the Laura, which I had begged the postmaster to keep back. “ Good news from home ” after so many days was a joyful event, and as we were hastening to a quiet spot to enjoy them, our friend Anna appeared, and begged us to come to her aunt’s house. Thither we repaired and read •our letters in comfort, and had some delicious milk, after which we took a walk with Anna to the monument, and sat for awhile. I made a few hasty pencil sketches, by which time it was getting dim and we had to return. Anna came on board the ship to say good-bye. She says she will probably not be here next year, as she will pass an examina- tion and then go to Copenhagen to study further. Thorshavn will not seem like itself without her. 17th.—One more stop, at Transvik, where we did not go ashore. The wind was blowing rather ominously even in the bay 7 and when we came outside we got into a real gale, which increased towards night, and was the worst I have experienced in this trip. All night long the rolling and pitching and straining continued, and the noise and distur- bance of movable articles on board was very great. I believe I slept through the'worst, but some cases with bottles and breakables of sorts must have been left carelessly, as there was a considerable smash and destruction, and the stewards were up between 4 and 5 a.m. collecting debris. In our cabin nothing worse than a piece of soap came down from some unknown qifarter on B.’s head; but we heard wonderful tales of chaos in some of our friends’ cabins. Very few mustered at breakfast next day, but there was always a little party of five, Captain J., the two Messrs. C., the •doctor, and myself, who stood their ground and ate (usually with a hearty appetite) over the “ fiddles.” There was won- derfully little motion in the dining saloon, I thought, even at the worst.
