190 APPENDIX. to convey Hannes to Hof at an appointed time. Hannes was not to delay his coming long after Christmas; that time he spent at Hals, but intended to be at the priest’s by the New Year. Though we would not go so far as to say that Hannes was a greedy man as to his food, he nevertheless •liked good eating the same as others, and he knew well what farms were best to stay at on high festivals, and knew .no less how best to arrange his journeys with a view to this. He started from Hals the fourth day of Yule, and his guide was a stout girl called Gudda. She herself was on a journey to Dunk for a holiday—her kitchen work had not allowed this before—and though it took her a little out of her way, she would not leave the old man till he was come safe to his destination, and she brought him to Hof the fifth day of Yule, just before dusk, and lodged the night before at Myri. Then Gudda went on her own way, and Hannes was lodged in the room at Hof. The house at Hof was so arranged that the entrance and •the living room were in five compartments ; it was a wains- cotted house, two compartments wide at the other end of the living room, and the family dwelt there, but the stair was in the middle of the fore loft. The women-servants at Hof were four this year—Una, Solveig, Ingirid, and Bjorg—and they were sitting with their spinning forward in the loft, when, as the arrival of Hannes was expected, the priest’s wife came along the loft to her maids, and said to them, smiling : “Now, you’ll have no stories from Hannes in the evening, .girls, unless one of you will sit beside him.’ “That’s too bad,” answered Bjorg, “to have no story unless one sits beside the old creature. I say, for my part, I’d go far enough the other way.” “ You don’t care much for a story,’’ answered Ingirid, “ if you won’t sit beside the harmless old man for one evening.” “ Nay, but sit you beside him, Inga,” said Bjorg. “ I
