No man in the King’s palace knew of this cave, the more so, as no man’s feet had climbed there ; also the cave’s mouth was girded with heights, with rocks all across and around it on all sides. The principal cave lay exactly at right angles to the rocky wall, and out of it to the right hand was a great side cave, dark and shadowy ; and therein was a cave-dweller. “ On the evening of that day when the maids had disap- peared he was inside his cave, and held up a young boy who lay in a swoon. This boy was Helgi, the King’s son, and the cave-dweller was trying to waken him from his swoon. This took some time, and when the boy came to himself, he began to weep sore, and lament that he was parted from his parents. But the cave-dweller gave him a drink of forgetfulness, which caused him to forget his father and mother and all that had happened in his life before. After that he became soothed. The cave-dweller now called the boy Asmund, but bade him address himself as Vermund. More he did not tell him of his circumstances, but bade him content himself well in the cave, and brought him playthings to amuse himself with. “ There were more alive in the cave,” said Hannes, “ than Vermund and the King’s son. There was the cave-dweller’s horse, great and fair, and his mane was of shining gold, and lighted up the cavern. On this account was the horse most noble-looking. Further, there was in the cave a bird, which sat on a projecting rock in the cave. He was bound to the rock with a cord, which seemed an ell long when the fowl sat, but so elastic was it that the bird could not only fly at will inside the cave, but also a long way outside before it. The bird was dull-looking, and sang, nevertheless, with a wondrous and fair voice. And there was a great chest in the cave, which had the appearance of stone. “ Every day the cave-dweller went out to chase beasts and birds to strengthen their provisions, and he always came
