APPENDIX. 213 seemed as though a heavy stone had been lifted off the King and all his court, and all heard those tidings gladly. “ Helgi, the King’s son, was deeply in love with Alfdisa, the King’s daughter, and presented his suit for her hand; which was accepted by his daughter. The bridal feast was prepared with the greatest honour, and there was mickle gladness, and they were short of no pleasant drink. At the end of the feast men were given gifts, and many went away rich who had come poor; and when the young couple went to their bridal chamber they found there costly wedding-gifts of gold and gems, especially a lady’s dress, so splendid that the like had never been seen before in the world; likewise a suit of armour so beautiful that light flashed from it, and a gold-hilted sword, that were both destined for the King’s son. None knew who had given these gifts, but Helgi, the King’s son, recognized the same treasures which he had seen in the dwarf’s dwelling, and the young couple thought that they owed him thanks for these gifts. “ A short time after the King, Helgi’s father-in-law, died, when he had become very old ; Helgi was then placed on the throne with his Queen, and Vermund became his chief councillor.” And now Hannes wound up with these words : “ They loved each other well and long, had children and store, dug roots and walls : * “ The butter ran, the fat’s in the pan, The story’s told for every man Who listen can : Let his beans burn in the pot Who no fee for me has got, First to-day, then to-morrow; The cat’s a-cold, out on the wold— My tale is told.” * Note.—I have only attempted to give a rough free rendering of Hannes’ epilogue, which was told me by an Icelander to be little more than “absolute nonsense.”
