THREE VISITS TO ICELAND. 27' were a very cosy, genial and friendly party. They are a very chatty and amusing pair. In the course of the evening Mr. M. told me that he had heard from several people on board ship—in fact, till he had spoken to me he hardly knew that it was not true—that I took a great interest in Iceland, and was going to invest, he believed, ^5,000 in it: —either in a Geysir or rivers, or something else ! This- extraordinary idea was further strengthened by my talking, Icelandic to my shipmates from thence, especially the good man from America. It was not he who spread the report, however; Mr. M. told me that, though he did not mention other names. And to any one who did ask me about it I must have said enough to show that, as I assured the M.s,. my Icelandic interests were purely literary. But the episode is very amusing, and shows how little we know what our neighbours say and think of us ! It is laughable to think that, as Mr. M. said, I was the person who excited by far the most interest of all in the boat. This day will be one to be long remembered by me. We settled to ride to the hot springs in the afternoon. A. and D. went to fish after breakfast, and in the morning we asked Palsson if we could go out and see the Althing (Parliament), as the M.s saw it yesterday. It is sitting now. He said yes, he would come for us at the time when it was open; so we walked across. Reykjavik is such a dear little town —everything is in a nutshell, as it were ; no tiresome long walks in the streets. The Althing-House is a large square stone building, next the Cathedral. Over the door is a little figure of a hawk. It has a large clean entrance hall and wide stone stair. We followed our guide through a passage into a little gallery, whence we could look down on the meeting. The hall itself, or chamber of meeting, is a large light room, with a very handsome ceiling, painted in shades of blue, with white mouldings and ornaments.
