THREE VISITS TO ICELAND. 37 and I was introduced to Fru Thorsteinsson, the lady of the house, quite a young woman ; her sister (who waits on us), her mother, and one or two other women. There was a dear little baby girl of seven months, the first child; a clean, healthy-looking little thing, called Ingun. I managed to exchange some words with the ladies ; then I was shown the best parlour, a very snug pretty little room, much like an old-fashioned manse parlour. There were books, pictures, and flower-pots in the window; there was a little back room off it, where some of their best things were kept. Fru Thorsteinsson showed us some photos, one of the parsonage, and afterwards they let us see some of the festival costumes ; the foundation of the high cap worn by the women, which is crowned with the faldr or long white veil; also some lovely old belts, silver on velvet, and a border to the cap, little gold filagree stars like Maltese or Venetian work. Then I saw the eldhus or kitchen, which is like pictures I have seen, with a hole in the roof to let out the smoke. But none of the rooms look dark or comfort- less as I imagined they might; even the loft where they sleep was very light and cheerful—there are beds, like the Scotch peasants’ shut beds, down each side, and a hand- loom for making wadmcil (the native woollen cloth); and the purlieus of the kitchen, &c., do not look a bit more uncivilized than what you see in many Scotch crofts. After this tour of inspection I got Palsson to read with me a little ; he is very good-natured about it, and gave quite a nice lesson. He says I am improving, and he can under- stand me much better now. He read some of the con- versations in my grammar, and some poetry, and I read after him. It is certainly as difficult a living language as I ever tackled, and I am glad I mastered the drudgery of the grammar long ago, as I can give myself up to learning the oral part. Some of the songs in the poetry-book are lovely, and P. reads very well. I said I should get the book and
