We are thinking of leaving to-morrow, though it is Sunday; there is no service in the church here, as the priest has another church to go to, a good way off; if this weather continues there is no use staying here, and we should be much better at Reykjavik. But we have been very busy, and very merry over diaries, and Icelandic conversation, &c., and just now good Palsson came in for his last visit before bedtime. We talked all together for some time about different things, and I showed him a copy of some verses I had written after my first sight of Iceland. He read them and understood nearly every word, and seemed pleased, so I asked him to keep them, and he thanked me very prettily. I hope he liked the sentiments expressed in the verses, at all events. I have not mentioned that we had a very short look out of doors early to-day and saw some very curious rocky ground, great rifts going down apparently to fathomless depths, with water at the bottom and such beautiful colours of rock and reflection.' No more fascinating place could be, if the sun would only shine; such charming little flowers, too. I found one Palsson called kuman, and one punga-gras, also berries like blackberry, and the loveliest moss. Ferns too, the ordinary ones such as we have in Scotland, growing to any depth in the rifts. D. gathered some for me out of a deep little chasm, where one was almost afraid to look down ! It is mortifying to have to come to Thingvellir, and not even to have seen the Logberg, or Hill of Laws, but still I am glad to have seen Almannagja, and I have tried to make the most of the day indoors.
