48 THREE VISITS TO ICELAND. After dinner we hastened out again, and away to the other piece of shore where we went last night: saw the sun set in a lovely sky, and sketched again. The shores are delightful here : they might be the Isle of Wight, but for the general cold grey tone of colour. The sea this afternoon was as smooth as possible, and as blue. I have used up all my cobalt! and shall have to run to my children’s store, for I do not think there is a shop in Reykjavik that has requisites fyrir mala (painting). If I were staying here I should certainly try bathing: there are endless quiet little bits of coast, and rocks, and shallows ; and little huts where you could dress, no doubt, for a kron or so ! Palsson passed the sitting-room door to-day, and as I greeted him he looked in. He said he had been walking all day ; so many friends to say good-bye to. He looks like a man who ought to have many friends. I think I have not mentioned the German botanist who shares our parlour and dinner-table. He is a Lieutenant Kuhler (naval)—a middle-aged, genial man. He looked at my little collection , of plants in the pot, but is afraid they will not all live. 'However, I shall try ! He has dis- covered several new flora for Iceland—four, I think. He likes to be talked to in German, but talks a little English. He is going back in the Laura. An Icelander from America is also here, who is supposed to be interested in railways and improvements of all sorts. His name is Sigtryggr Jonasson. He dined at table d'hote to-day. He is a heavy quiet-looking man, very like a Scotch farmer ; he speaks English perfectly. He sat by A., and they talked politics—Icelandic chiefly. Though I am not much of a politician, I am interested in the affairs of Iceland. The Icelanders are so reasonable, and they are so quiet; there is no doubt but the Danes keep them down. This man said they would get on much better on their own foundation; and that they had declined since they were
