60 THREE VISITS TO ICELAND. Mr. B. and Major A. had an exhibition of the silver trea- sures they have collected, which are most beautiful; belts and buckles of wonderful old work, and other things besides. I had bought a belt myself, and Mr. B. told me it was one which he had seen and intended buying, as he believed its clasp had been changed. He had a clasp which he intended putting with it. However, I did not feel inclined to make any exchange, as possibly he might have hoped. I was quite content with my purchase as it stood; and he had a large collection of silver ornaments—some gilt. I was rather scandalized to see a very good old chalice and paten come out of the box : silver, with the remains of old gilding, and perfectly lovely in their simplicity. This time they have fallen into good hands, as Mr. B. means to give them to his own church; but it is dreadful to think of the Icelanders letting such things go out of their country, and selling their precious relics for foreign gold! Mercifully the Skalholt treasures are all in the Reykjavik Museum—waiting, may we not hope ? for an Icelandic Catholic revival. We saw a rather interesting sight this afternoon: three ponies slung on board at Thorshavn. They were brought up to the ship’s side in a boat, and then the slings were fastened on them, and they were hoisted up by the- steam crane. The poor little things were very quiet, but they looked so curious with their legs straight out hanging in mid-air, like the Order of the Golden Fleece. It was soon over, and they were let gently down into the hold. The men seem all very kind and quiet with them ; none of that rough knocking about which one too often sees in England in the transit of dumb animals. As soon as they were down among the rest they began feeding and seemed quite happy. Our ship is frightfully crowded to-night, and horror! we are to have another occupant of our cabin. I don’t yet know whom. Dr. J. came on board from Thorshavn; he is coming home in the Thyra, the other mail-boat, later.
