They will, I hope, sing again to-night; and we have a great'project, headed by A., to give a mutual concert—they, and our singing people, to sing songs turn about. I think it would amuse both sides. Also I had an exhibition of Edith’s sketches : I was showing them to Helgi, and most of the other people crowded round and seemed much gratified. Poor “ old Althing ” has been talking to me most kindly. He says Icelandic sentences very slowly, and then always asks, “Skiljift thjer thaS ?” (“ Do you understand that?”). By the time I get home I shall probably become fluent! and then— as I keep on lamenting to my friends—I shall hear no more Islenska for a year. Helgi gave me a real lesson to-day, and seemed to take such pleasure in it. He wrote out for me a quatrain of verses made by an Icelandic student, on board the Laura years ago, in praise of the Scotch coast. 28th.—Here we are at Granton, after a most prosperous voyage all through. Our dear native land receives us with a cold wind and much thick air and smoke. Such a contrast to sunny little Reykjavik ! Luckily it is fine overhead. The concert fell through last night, because the Ice- landers said it was too windy to sing outside; we invited them to our saloon, and had meant to give them entertain- ment there, but they declined; inviting us, however, to come to their saloon and hear them if we liked ; and Helgi and Palsson came and offered to take us down. Only E. and I and Mr. B. responded to the invitation. Palsson took E.’s arm and Helgi mine, for it was very dark. They guided us down to the little second saloon, where the singers and their friends were sitting over their beer. It transpired after, through Helgi, that the two German students were treating them, so that was the real reason why they could not leave them and come to us.
