THREE VISITS TO ICELAND. 67 This morning we were up early—lying at anchor. The captain is better. The tide prevents our landing till n. It seemed quite funny to hear the men in a boat talk English ! I heard one of the passengers speak of sending a telegram by a boat, so I took the opportuuity of doing the same, to let our home-people know of our arrival. I have been talking to my Icelandic friends, giving addresses, &c. I have promised to make Palsson a picture of Reykjavik to remind him of home. I asked which of my sketches he would like me to copy, and he chose the one from outside the town, “ with the Cathedral, and the Althinghouse, and the school where I was so long time ! ” He is so much .interested by all he sees. He is going home in June or July—perhaps in the good old Laura. He said perhaps he should see me next year ; I said yes, but I should have to get his brother to take me about, as he would be busy doctoring. He laughed and agreed. Poor Helgi will not go home for a year or two. I am so sorry to part from all my Iceland friends, as I told them ; every one has been so kind and good to me. They said they liked when any one took interest in their country. Dear people, it would be strange indeed if one did not! they are really a unique people, and singularly lovable. Some one—I don’t know who—said the Icelanders would like to be under England. I don’t know if it is so, but they hate the Danes, and not without reason, I fancy. I had a long talk with Helgi, not on politics so much as on the customs, and what might be improved. He is rather advanced in his ideas; and speaking of their not liking fresh air, either Danes or Icelanders, he said, when I asked him, that he liked plenty of fresh air. (Speaking of this, one of the amusing minor episodes of our trip was the constant “ battle of the hatches ” kept up by Britons versus Danes—which generally ended in the British end of the saloon being kept fairly ventilated.
