(Meal-stead) and the farmer at Reylcir (respectively five and four miles from the fjord) so effectually stop the ascent of the fish, that the pastor at Steffi arbakki, a mile or two above Melster&r, had not caught a single salmon in 1880, when the author visited the river. The pastor and farmer at the two places first mentioned own respectively the land on the west and east side of the lower reaches of the river, and divide the fishing by using their nets on alternate days; and the river not being deep, the modus operandi is to drag down-stream from about ‘ half-flood ’ and meet the fish running up with the incoming tide. The night that the author stayed at Reyltir it was the farmer’s turn to fish, and he caught eleven fine salmon, and three grilse of about 5 lbs. Up to this date, 26th July, 1880, he had caught 202 salmon, and the pastor at Melstcd&r had caught about the same number. Melstcr6r is one day’s ride from BoA&eyri ; two from SaulSalcrdlcr, a trading post at the head of the Skagafi6r¥>r, called at by the Danish steamers ; four from Altureyri, and about a week from the capital. (Routes 3 and 4.) YfSiDALsi. (Wooded-valley-river).—A day’s ride east of the MPSfjarSra. Salmon are very numerous in this river, but are very capricious, and it is believed that none have ever been caught with the artificial fly. The author one evening carefully fished a pool that was literally full of salmon and did not get a fish. The net five minutes after he ceased fishing brought to land sixteen large salmon. Yery comfortable quarters indeed at Borg, whose owner, Petr Christophersson, speaks capital English, and is a very genial, hospitable man. Trout are to be caught in the upper waters of the river, and in a tributary flowing from the Vestrahopsvatn. Good grouse, curlew, and plover shooting in the neighbourhood. YatnsdalsA (Lake-valley-river).—Two hours’ ride east of Borg. Arrangements have been made with the farmers owning the best stretches of water on this river for the sole right of fishing. Laxa fbom the LaxLbvatn.—A small stream a few miles east of the last-named river. It is well stocked with salmon in those years when the summer is not exceptionally dry. The pastor at Hjaltabalclci catches a great many salmon every year, and the farmer at Sy^rnes, not far from the Laxarvatn, also catches a few. There is said to he excellent trout-fishing in that lake, and likewise in the Svinavatn, a few miles off. Grouse plentiful in this neighbourhood in August.
