Two additional kroner, however, must he allowed, as occasionally it will he necessary to employ a ferryman, and, when a mountain is ascended or difficult ground traversed, a local guide. The above includes everything save the midday meal, which should he carried by the travellers and eaten al fresco—a few biscuits and a tin of tongue and chicken, or some other portable provision that may be eaten cold. In round figures, a pound each will be ample to cover the expenses of two persons travelling in company in Iceland; save on the Geysir trip, when, if it should not happen that Zoega has a tent at the farm near, or the tourists join a large party from the steamer, an additional expense of about £ 5 will have to he incurred to transport a hired tent to and from the Geysir. If the author and a companion were about to visit the Geysir, and Zoega had not got a tent at the farm near (he generally has throughout the summer), the author would not incur the trouble and expense of transporting one to and from Reykjavik, but would trust to be able to borrow at Haukadulr, or some other farm in the vicinity, one of the small tents of home manufacture, which most large farmers possess for the use of their servants when hay- making at a distance from home. The number of tourists visiting Iceland showing a large annual increase, no doubt in the course of a year or so it will pay the farmer owning the site of the Geysir, or some enterprising individual, to run up a substantial wooden building in its immediate vicinity as a summer hotel. This would be a great boon to tourists, as to see this great natural wonder in a state of activity an individual travelling alone has frequently to incur an expense of several pounds to bring a tent for use here for a night or two, which is not required elsewhere on the tour. Reykjavik is the best starting-point for tourists and anglers, pingvellir being distant therefrom, but one day’s easy ride, Geysir two, and Hekla three, if one proceeds by the most direct route; while there are several rivers where fishing is obtainable within from two to three days’ ride. Guides and ponies are more readily obtainable in the capital than at any of the trading posts round the coast, Zoega being generally in a position to furnish from fifty to a hundred ponies at a day’s, or at the most two days’ notice. It is a good plan, however, even if it is intended to make a tour only as far as Hekla, to write to Zoega by the mail preceding, by at least a month, the departure of the steamer by which it is proposed to sail, and request him to have the number of ponies required, and a guide, ready against the arrival of the steamer with the tourists on board; or when they arrive it may chance that both
