As the accuracy of every bearing is mainly dependent, upon the compass-needle being steady, and parallel to the deviating magnetic meridian, and as the needle will be easily caused to vibrate when manipulating the bearing apparatus, if the latter be fixed direct to the compass-box, — all bearings were taken with Wille’s Azimuth Dumb- card, an instrument devised by the author in 1869, and which has since been officially adopted for the Norwegian Navy.
