A SAIL THROUGH THE FAROE ISLANDS. 109 solemn quiet bay, with glassy water and big hills all round it. One felt at once that this was the spot of spots for a sea-robber’s lair. After a harrying cruise along the Scotch and Irish coasts, full of slaughterings and burn- ings, many an old viking has rowed his “ long ships ” in from the wild Atlantic through the narrow fiord to this peaceful haven. We could picture the division of the spoil by lot, the recital of the sagas of the bold and bloody deeds of this or the other jarl, the coarse and gluttonous feasting, the deep drinking to Freya and Odin;—for our minds at the moment were somewhat tinged with Icelandic and Norse romance, and we were full of the reivings and blood-feuds of Njal and Skarphed- din, of Kari and Flosi. This is one of the most noted places for the capture of schools of whales. Two or three times a year the natives get a haul of this kind. As soon as the whales are seen in the narrow fiord, the fiery cross (grindabot) goes round, and every boat from every village for miles away is rowing to the scene as if for life and death. The whales are hemmed in and driven by shouts and stones into the bay, across the narrow mouth of which a sort of net of ropes is rigged up and a small line of boats stationed. Then commences the harpooning and slaughtering of the prisoned fish. Sometimes they make a rush for the entrance, and are hindered by the ropes or driven back by the line of boats, and so the killing goes on till the waters are literally red with blood. We had with us a charming account of a cruise in the yacht “ Maria” round the Faroe Islands in 1855, by Mr Greg and Mr Samuel Rathbone, respectively, the father and uncle of Mr Thomas Greg and Oswald Rathbone, who were with us.
