A SAIL THROUGH THE FAROE ISLANDS. 113 protruded through the grass. Something of the same nature we had already noticed in the islands at the southern entrance of the Westman’s Fiord. Here, however, the ridges were astonishingly regular. There seemed to be always two or three main black lines larger and better marked than the others, and we thought we could trace these all round wherever we looked. Some- times there would be an islet, formed by a solitary hill, and quite cut off from its next neighbour by a clear water space. Yet, oh such a hill, we could follow the same main ridges that were seen on the nearest land, and note that they were at the same distances from the water line. One would have said that the islands had origin- ally been submerged, and that the waters, as they sank, had remained stationary for longer or shorter periods at various levels, leaving a bare rocky line opposite each. When there had been a long rest, the waters had washed out a good coast line, and these were the large ridges which we could follow running along the sides of the railway embankments into the half-craters and round the cones and solitary hills. The true geological explanation of this terrace or tier-like regularity is that the Faroe Islands from top to bottom are trap-rocks. Originally they were thrown up by submarine volcanoes, and the enormous pressure of the ocean spread out the erupted matter like a layer of mortar, and, by prevent- ing the escape of the enclosed vapour, enabled it to retain its fluidity for a long time, and so to assume a perfect horizontality. Time after time came later belch- ings forth, with the same result of more horizontal beds ; until at last some great upheaval thrust the islands out of ocean into air with all their parallel terraces upon them.
