Then, when evening drew on, we ran in behind a charming little island at the mouth of the Storr Fiord, and cast anchor for the night. It was a place of absolute calmness and rest, where the water was so clear and still that we could see every weed at the bottom, twenty feet down. We rowed ashore and scrambled about the beach, and replenished our stock of wild flowers, with which the ladies always contrived to keep the saloon decorated. Then we inspected a little farm, and bought milk and flatbrod from the people, and gave small coins to the little children, who then (as every Norwegian does when you give him a present or a gratuity) solemnly advanced and shook hands with us by way of acknowledgment. On Wednesday we ran up the Storr Fiord till we arrived at the very place where the “ Argo ” a few years previously had stuck on a sunken rock, whose existence was only known to a few fishermen on the adjacent shore. Here we landed, and Mr Alfred went to renew his acquaintance with sundry of the neighbouring folks who had befriended the shipwrecked mariners, while Miss Melly, who had been one of the victims, showed us the barn in which they slept on the night of the accident, and other places of interest connected with the disaster. The rock was now marked by the usual besom. Some of us pulled over it in one of the boats, and saw its treacherous top only a few feet beneath the water, the tide being then low. While the “ Argo ” lay off and on for a few hours, some went fishing for trout in a neighbouring brook and brought back enough for a good fry. Mrs George worked hard with her pencil and brush to get some views of a place so memorable in
