His companions left him, and had gone some two or three hundred yards away, when they heard a fearful bellowing, and running back, found him engaged with a good-sized fish, which he had on for about five minutes. At the end of which time, by a furious rush right into the boiling water at the head of the pool, leviathan made his escape, being determined not to be drawn out with an hook. Who shall paint the agony of the fisher ? Next morning and the next again, he and the Chairman, animated by the most murderous feelings of revenge, were up at four in the morning in quest of that fish, but they never saw him, nor any of his sisters or his cousins or his aunts. On Thursday, as soon as breakfast was over, we set about preparing for a long-talked-of expedition to the Geiranger Fiord, an arm of the Storr, the entrance of which was about a couple of miles from where we were lying. It and the Nero further south are two of the most noted specimens of Norwegian fiord scenery. Both are short, narrow arms of larger fiords, characterised by the enormous height of the mountains which rise sheer from the water’s edge, and by an awful and gloomy grandeur which invests them. We had a large steam- launch on board, said to be of the newest and most effective construction. Often we had eyed it during the voyage and said what we would do with it, conse- quently we were quite excited when at last we saw it in the water, with fire kindled and steam up, puffing and snorting violently. A grand provisioning was made, no end of wraps stowed away, Mendelssohn and our trusty glees packed up, and, all being ready, the ship’s biggest boat was attached by a tow-rope to the launch, and the expedition moved off with great eclat.
