I3I we left the “Argo,” they two had set to work, and found that all that was wanted was first to get up a good head of steam before starting, and then to elongate the funnel, which they had done by sticking on a roll of copper sheathing. As we sped back down the fiord our friends, the hay- makers, were still at work, though the evening shades were wearing on. We wondered what solemn remarks they would be making about the Engelsks, with their spitfire boat, belching smoke and showers of sparks as it shot beneath them! With the lessening daylight the impressions produced by our surroundings became intensified, and the solemnity of the place was almost painful. When we got into the wider and lighter Storr we felt a sense of relief, and the bay of Hellesylt, with its pretty village, its white-washed church, and its rush- ing river, seemed like home again. No sooner were we on board than the launch, just to show how we had maligned it, careered two or three times round and round the ship with the speed of a comet. On Friday morning (July 16th) we bade adieu to Hellesylt and steamed down the Storr to Aalesund, one of the most considerable of the smaller Norwegian ports. We tied ourselves up to a great buoy just out- side the little harbour, and then went ashore for a while. Aalesund is a pretty town, with its clean streets and brightly-painted houses. Its main trade is cod- packing. The dried fish are brought down from the Loffoden Islands and the north coasts, and are con- signed to merchants here who have large warehouses. We inspected one of these. The smell was fishy enough, but by no means offensive, as the cods are just like dried sticks to look at. We saw them being packed
