i8 A TRIP IN THE "ARGO. While hanging about the church door before service we made the acquaintance of two gentlemen. One was Mr Jochumsson, the editor of the “ Pjodolfur,” which must of necessity mean Daily Telegraph, inasmuch as it has the largest circulation in Iceland. His brother-in-law, Mr Petersen, a merchant, was with him. Both, of course, spoke English perfectly; indeed, Mr Petersen had been for several years in an office in London. What a change from the Strand to the main street of Reykjavik! They were most intelligent men, and we were soon on friendly terms with them, and learnt from them in a short time a great deal about the way in which things were managed in the island. They both evidently belonged to the Young Iceland party, which has been instrumental in obtaining an autonomy for the country, and were anxious for an out-and-out severance from Denmark. As is the common custom in small Scandi- navian towns, the chief householders and men of position run up their flags on Sundays and fete days. We noticed here that the majority flew the red cross of Denmark, but a few mounted a blue flag with a white bird upon it. These were members of the Extreme Left, who had invented a national flag, which, though not legally recognised, was not interfered with. Our new acquaintances were invited on board, and their conversation was most instructive and agreeable. After lunch we went on shore, and Mr Jochumsson led us to his house, where we made the acquaintance of" his wife. A very modest and unaffected woman she was, with a quiet grace about her that enabled her with equanimity to face an invasion of fifteen Britishers, all rather in an inquisitive frame of mind.
