Speculating upon these points we spread our beds, and amidst many jokes curled ourselves up for the night among the pews, round the little altar, or in a small loft, where, in place of an organ, we found the parson’s saddles, furs, and gear for winter work. But everybody who has been to the Geysers has described a night in Thingvalla Church, and our proceedings were the same as those of our predecessors as far as tossing, groaning, and snoring were concerned. At the same time it was such a queer and altogether uncanny perform- ance, with a tinge of the ghostly in it, that we shall never forget it. We were up betimes in the morning, and the church- goers soused their heads in a bucket on the kirk steps, and passed round the comb of friendship. After breakfast Zoega was nearly driven mad by his efforts to get the pil- grims started. All the things had to be put back in their bags, the ponies collected, the guides fed, the saddling and bridling done, and every traveller accommodated with the nag that, in Zoega’s judgment, was best suited either to his tastes or his infirmities. No wonder he said many things in Icelandic that had something of a mina- tory and Athanasian twang about them. Mrs Holt and Mr Bateson, feeling hardly equal to pursuing the journey to the Geysers, agreed to remain at the clergyman’s house till our return, and, as our cavalcade filed off, they stood at the church door and waved their adieus and bon voyage to us.
