Another scramble, and in ten seconds the string of horses is climbing the muddy bank amid a wild and ringing cheer from their riders. Kindling a huge fire, we stripped and dried our drenched garments before it, while each traveller swallowed a cup of smoking coffee, with a good dash of rum in it, to keep out the cold. After about forty minutes’ rest we resumed our march, still skirting the long grassy valley. The track here became cut up into numerous deep ruts about two feet broad, and from two to four feet deep. Each horse selected his own rut and went along it. The rider’s legs had to be lifted into the air, or else, as was often done, in order to relieve his horse, he placed his feet on the grassy sward on each side (still sitting in the saddle), and propelled himself along with a sort of scuttling or waddling action. As evening drew on several of the company began to show signs of exhaustion, and no wonder, after such a day of exertion. The services of Dr Catoff, the medical officer of the expedition, were never more required, and most nobly he strove to sustain the flagging energies of the exhausted ones. Rushing from one to another, he plied them well with doses of the sustaining Ipec wine. Who, that has travelled among the Aztec Indians of Patagonia, has not observed the marvellous effects of this drug? Upon a teaspoonful of this and a pinch of snuff, these hardy hunters will march from morn till night under a tropical sun without showing a sign of fatigue or turning a hair on their shaven scalps.
