To take a few examples :—We read of a wonderful cathedral of Thingwall of noble architectural proportions. There may be such now, but at the date of our visit, only a few months ago, there was a small wooden church, about fifty feet in length, made of pitched boards, and with difficulty to be distinguished from the rocks round about it. We noticed in it a small picture of the size and artistic merit of the ordinary public-house signboard, which, we presume, is the gorgeous altar-piece by Skumbling, dwelt upon by his lordship. Concerning the ponies, any one who has been down an English mine, and has seen these poor little beasts dragging trucks of coal, will hardly be able to find in them the Araby coursers and bounding steeds of the Pampas which they are here depicted. All this, however, may be merely exaggeration, but it is impossible to overlook the crass ignorance shown by the author in giving to a place the name of Burnt Njal which, as everybody knows, is the title of one of the most celebrated Icelandic Sagas, the translation of which by Dasent is found in the library of every educated gentleman. And we pass from the region of mere contempt or astonishment to that of positive indignation at the utter disregard of truth evinced in the description of the utilisation of the Geyser water for house-heating purposes. Why, there is not six feet of piping in the whole island ! Such unwarrantable state- ments, by a man whose social position should place him far above the necessity of pandering to public credulity, fill us with a righteous anger, which becomes actually incandescent, when we read of the party on their arrival at the Geyser field bathing their parched foreheads and
