There was hardly any wind, which was somewhat of a misfortune, inasmuch as the steam- clouds ascended straight up and were not blown away, so that our view of the great jets of water was somewhat obscured. The sloping ground below the fountain, over which we had been constantly walking on the previous day, was now covered with streams of boiling water, and some, who essayed to get to the far side of the basin, had not a little difficulty in hopping over them. The rush and roar of this deluge went on unin- terruptedly for perhaps seven or eight minutes, and then slowly the waters sank down and the steam-cloud floated away. We at once ascended the hillock and found the saucer empty. We did so without fear, as Zoega assured us that, unlike Strokr, the great Geyser never breaks out again after his fit is over. So intense had been the heat that the interior of the siliceous basin was quite dry, just like a gun barrel after cleaning it with boiling water. In the centre was the basin, a great bore hole some ten feet across, far down which the waters could be heard boiling and bubbling. This retreat of the waters after an eruption, which we noticed in a minor degree with Strokr, was most singular. Slowly they began to rise to the top of the pipe, and in a short time the saucer was again full and gently brimming over, while the basin once more resumed its usual placid appearance, as if it had never known the throes of the convulsion which we had just witnessed. It was now a brilliant morning with the promise of a roasting day. Our excitement had been so great that it was out of the question to attempt further sleep, so the order was given to collect the ponies and strike the tents. For the next hour or two every one was
