We left him engaged in a struggle to get on again, in which he was being assisted by a companion only a trifle less drunk than himself. A little further on we came to a gentle- man prone upon the ground, his pony standing quietly beside him, with its bridle hitched round its prostrate master’s leg. When the captain of the “Argo” heard about this he was greatly tickled, and considered the prudence of this individual, in thus “ mooring ” himself to his pony before becoming finally insensible, was worthy of the most wary navigator. It must be admitted that, had this been our only day in Iceland, we should have gone away with the idea that the inhabitants were the most drunken people on the planet, and that a local Sir Wilfred was most urgently wanted. Indeed, sundry writers who have only spent a few days in and around Reykjavik, at this particular period of the year, have said so. But in reality such is not the case. From all the information we could get, it was clear that what we saw was quite exceptional, and that the Icelander for the most part is a temperate man. Indeed he has not the means of getting drunk. But at the annual fair time he sometimes breaks loose, and has what the gentleman of colour called a regular “ drinkee for drunkee,” as opposed to the natural “drinkee for drinkee.” One musn’t be too hard upon him. Some of us were of opinion that if we had been obliged to spend the year in the neighbourhood of Mount Hecla or the Vatna Jokul, perhaps even we should have loosened the reins somewhat when we went up on our yearly trip to the capital.
