6o A Holiday in Iceland. I'remained about an hour in the water, by which time all stiffness had left my limbs, and, feeling quite fresh again, I proceeded to go the round of these famous springs of which I had heard so much, and, so far, seen so little. They are situated on a gentle slope under the shadow of a long hill, and take up a space of about half-a-mile in every direction. The “ Giantess” geyser, to which we first turned our attention, is a circular basin of clear boiling water about seventy feet at its greatest diameter, and ten feet deep. It rests on a sort of cone, composed entirely of siliceous matter, perhaps twelve feet high. The crater is of very regular form, and has a large tube in the centre sinking to a depth of ninety feet, from which, during an eruption, the water is thrown with terrific power and violence, rising sometimes in immense volumes to a height of a hundred and fifty or two hundred feet. On the hot ground, around this strange place, we spread our garments to dry, for clothes more or less damp had been our lot ever since leaving Reykjavik. So great was the heat that it was impossible to stand long in one place, and as the whole party stood, first raising one foot and then the other, I could not help comparing them to a gang of convicts taking their turn on the tread-mill. Suddenly a rumbling sound was heard, like distant thunder, and the ground under our feet violently shaken. At the same moment a warning cry was heard from Zoega, so, hurriedly gathering
