14 “dreadful whirlpools.” We observed that although it was easy for one man to manage a boat going with the current, it took at least ten to make any headway against it. At Westmanhaven a number of people were waiting to see us land, for the mail steamer calls but once a year They all saluted us by raising their hats, and informed us “ the most amusing things were the church, water fall and bridge ” The last is the largest in all the Faroes, and spans a river some 12ft. wide. Accepting the hospitality of a native, we entered his bouse, and, after looking round, we felt that the path of life must be rough rather than smooth in these places Yet there was a quiet air of contentment and kindness about our host and his neighbours. Their diet consists of black and brown barley bread, milk, sea birds, and fish, fresh or dried or made into soup ; and at Christ- mas, according to a law of Magnus Lagabatur, made in 1299, each man servant on these islands must receive a sheep and every boy half a one. These sheep are the principal riches of the people, and their temporal happiness or misery depends on the success which attends their flocks ; if they prosper they can endure many other evils, such as a bad fishing season Of a part of the wool which is plucked from the backs at shearing time, the people make clothing for themselves, and with the remainder they manufacture cloth, jerseys, stockings and gloves, which they exchange for coffee, flour, and such things as they are in need of. The sheep remain out in the open, summer and winter, without ever been housed They can scrape away the snow and get grass in a good winter, but when the weather is severe many are lost by starvation, or by falling into the sea Indeed, two centuries ago, there was such a severe winter that the race became nearly extinct. We reached the waterfall by a narrow mountain road. The crookedness of some of these is remarkable, as they wind round the summit of the hills, and are so narrow that two people cannot walk alongside each other. This is at times very tiresome, for occasionally corpses have to be made fast to a board and carried in thatmanner to theplace of interment. We also visited a warm spring. One other exists near Osteroe, which was in former times the Harrogate or fashionable watering place, and here the people assembled at midsummer to dance
