1712. Of these 1660 un the title-page of various editions
is the date of the composition, not of publication ; 1682 is
very likely an error for 1680, the edition which weare now
treating. Thus the series may run: 1. Hólar 1077 ; 2.
Hólar 1680; 3. Skálh. 1693 ; 4. Hólarl712; 5. Hólar
1747 ; 6. Hólar 1773. The collection has all but the íirst.

“Passíusálmar” ; a full list of the editions will be found
in Bibl. Not. IV. no. 12. Since that list was issued, there
have been published 4 editions: —
jp/A editiotiy Reykjavík 1890.—Styled 38. utgáfa.
40U1 edition, Reykjavík 1896.—The number of the
editions was here corrected according to the list in Bibl.
Not. IV. There is no edition which on the title page is
styled the 39th.
4ist cdition, Reykjavík 1897. There are two issues
of this edition, an ordinary one, and an edition de luxe,
the pages of which are in red line - border.
42d edilion, Reykjavík 1900.
The collection now includes all the editions but three,
those of Hólar 1780 and 1791 and of Viðey 1820.— The
author of the7passional hymns printed in this 3d edition,
Guðmundur Erlendsson, rector of Fell i Sléttuhlíð (d.
1670), was a noted poet and hymnologist of his time, but
very few of his works have appeared in print. He has
written a number of “rímur” and poems on Scriptural
subjects (Rímur af Móses ; Rímuraf Saul og Davíð etc.),
metrical paraphrase of Æsop’s fables, and a few poems
on contemporary events as on Charles Stuart and the de-
struction of Magdeburg in 1631. He collected all his po-
etical productions in three books, which he called Fagri
skógur, Gýa and Syrþa, the first two of which contained
religious poems.
