Not. IV. no 47. The prayer - book of the Rev I’órður Bárðarson became even more popular when thc versified vcrsion of Bcch became a part of it. The preced- ing edition of the two in uniform volumettes (1730 - 31, see Bibl. Not, IV. nos. 4G and 47), was the prototype of this edition of 1740 (2 vols.) Subsequently the prose and verse (prayersand hymns) were issued in asingle volume. The author of the metrical rendering, Benedikt Magnús- son Bech (sometiines written Bekk), was sýslumaður (or sheriff) in Skagafjarðarsýsla and was drowned May 7,1716 at the age of 45 in the Hóraðsvötn. His versification of Þórður Bárðarson’s prayers has gone through the follow- ingeditions: 1. Hólar 1733 (see no. 43) ; 2. Hólar 1731 (see Bibl. Not. IV. 47) ; 3. HólafTftO; 4. Hólar 1746 ; 5. There was published no more of this edition, we do not know exactly for what reason. Bishop Steinn Jónsson’s death took place about that time (Dec. 2d, 1739), and Lorleifur Skaptason was “officialis” or the bishop’s substitute for one j'ear. The printing material was in a poor condition and there seems to have been some slackness of control and enterprise until Bishop Harboe and Skúli Magnússon took the reins in their hands as mentioned elsewhere.
